from The Craft of the Cocktail

  • 1.5 ounces Rum
  • .25 ounce Falernum
  • .5 ounce Lime Juice
  • .5 ounce Simple Syrup
  • dash Angostura Bitters
  • piece of Lime (Garnish)

Place all the ingredients in a tall glass with crushed ice, swizzle, and garnish with the lime piece.

The swizzle drinks are named after the Jamaican swizzle — a stick about twelve inches long and very thin with branches radiating out of one end that are actually the root structure cut short. The swizzle is surprisingly sturdy for what looks like a twig that could easily be snapped in half. To use the thing, it is placed in a tall drink with the root cluster in the drink and is rotated rapidly between the palms, agitating the drink as an electric mixer would.
